About the city
Tenjo is a municipality in the department of Cundinamarca, Colombia, located in the Sabana Centro province, some 28 kilometres from Bogotá, on the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. Founded in 1603 by Diego Gómez de Mena, its name comes from the Muisca language and it preserves traces of that past, such as the petroglyphs of the Las Petacas stones and the remains of a Muisca sanctuary, alongside a colonial church that now houses an archaeological museum. It had close to 22,000 inhabitants according to the 2018 census, and its economy combines agriculture, livestock farming, industry and tourism, with a growing residential role owing to its proximity to the capital. The Peña de Juaica, between Tenjo, Tabio and Subachoque, and the surrounding ridges offer hiking and mountain-biking routes. Tenjo has been designated American Town of Sport 2027, within the Colombian representation in the ACES network.
