About the city
Puerto Montt is the capital of the Los Lagos Region and of the province of Llanquihue, in southern Chile, a port city at the northern end of the Reloncaví Sound, some 1,055 kilometres from Santiago. It was founded on 12 February 1853, during the German colonisation of southern Chile, at the place known as Melipulli, and was named after President Manuel Montt. A gateway to the Chiloé Archipelago, to lakes Llanquihue and Nahuel Huapi and to western Patagonia, it has around 246,000 inhabitants and an economy tied to salmon farming, fishing and tourism. Its Chinquihue stadium, holding some 10,000 spectators and home to Deportes Puerto Montt, was a venue of the 2015 FIFA U-17 World Cup. Puerto Montt has been designated American City of Sport 2027, a title that brings it into the Chilean representation in the ACES network.
