About the city
Lins is a municipality in the west of the state of São Paulo, in Brazil, set at 437 metres of altitude and some 455 kilometres from the state capital. It began in the early 20th century as Santo Antônio do Campestre and grew with the arrival of the Northwest Brazil Railway (Estrada de Ferro Noroeste do Brasil); it became independent from Pirajuí in 1920 and is named after Manoel Joaquim de Albuquerque Lins, president of the state from 1908 to 1912. With just over 78,000 inhabitants, its sporting flagship is Clube Atlético Linense, founded in 1927 and nicknamed ‘Elefante da Noroeste’, which plays at the Gilbertão stadium, with 15,770 seats, and won the 2015 Copa Paulista. Lins has been designated American City of Sport 2027, a title that brings it into the Brazilian representation in the ACES network.
