About the city

La Estrella is a municipality in the department of Antioquia, Colombia, located at the southern end of the Aburrá Valley, within the metropolitan area of Medellín, some 16 kilometres away. Its founding decree dates from 1685 and its original name, Nuestra Señora de La Estrella, reveals its Marian roots; the patron saint festivities held every September in honour of Our Lady of the Rosary of Chiquinquirá are its best-known celebration. With some 49,000 inhabitants in just 35 square kilometres, it combines an urban centre at around 1,775 metres of altitude with a rural territory that climbs to the 2,800 metres of El Romeral, an ecological and forest reserve shared with neighbouring municipalities. That green setting and facilities such as the Edificio del Deporte were part of the ACES America evaluation visit in October 2026. La Estrella has been designated American City of Sport 2027, within the Colombian representation in the ACES network.
